Nilüfer Göle is awarded the French Légion d’honneur

An international background

Nilüfer Göle grew up in Ankara where she studied at the Middle Eastern Polytechnic (ODTÜ). She graduated in 1974, and in spite of having enrolled in a Master’s programme at the ODTÜ, she decided to study abroad and instead completed her education at the Paris I University. An Associate Professor at Istanbul’s Bosphorus University between 1986 and 2001, she has since worked at the EHESS. She has also been a Visiting Professor at institutes  such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the New School in New York. She is also a member of the scientific committee for the  magazine Turkish Review.

The highest French decoration

L’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur is a French institution responsible for awarding the highest decoration in France and was created by Napoléon Bonaparte on May 19th 1802. This decoration has five different levels, Knight, Officer, Commander, Grand Officer and Grand Cross.
Yasar Kemal, Ara Güler, Candan Erçetin, Sakip Sabanci, Oya Eczacibasi, Ümit Boyner, Güler Sabanci and Görgün Taner are other Turkish personalities who have been awarded the Légion d’Honneur.
