An e-mail on “Orianism”
Patricia Wilson
Giancarlo Bosetti is right in saying that "Orianism" is just a form of racism and is found in all groups of society, intellectual and illiterate - Patricia Wilson, one of our readers, writes - If one takes each of the attacks separately, each was done for a different reason by a person or persons from a different ethnicity. Time and skin color are the least important qualities.
The Spanish one was a group long based in Madrid that had been there for quite some time but no one in the group had been able to obtain and keep a job for any length of time. They had been influenced in Africa and in Spain by Salafists. That fundamental angle of Islam justified jihad and they used it more as an excuse to pay back what they had never received but felt they deserved. They knew the social rules well enough so that a good number committed suicide rather than face prison time. Most of the others that fled have been caught and tried. Both of the British (really all three) were done by disaffected young men.
They were not always without of jobs but each one felt he had been treated disrespectfully by white British citizens. Since most died in their attacks, no one will ever really know why. They had found out how to make the explosives over the Internet. They had listened to sermons in the mosques and on the Internet. They talked themselves into being ready for Paradise. No imam of any stature will tell his students that God/Allah is waiting. God/Allah doesn't tell anyone when his time is up. But these young men got it into their heads, Allah had. Those that were caught before they set anything off may have had reason by disaffection or money from imam or a branch of Al Qaeda - but very little was published here other than 2/3's of them were sent home and the rest have approximately 20 years to life for a variety of illegal actions and conspiracies. They may have just been "copycats."
The man that killed Theo van Gogh would have received the same treatment in the West, the Middle East or Asia if he had killed someone he did not agree with. Murder is murder! The two in Germany were totally different. One set came from Lebanon and was found there. The two Germans and a Turk are still in jail. One reason may have been Israel's unjustified attacks on Lebanon and/or Palestinians. The new converts in the latter may have "converted" to justify some vengeful act. The US hit on 9/11/01 was also done by disaffected young men who came from good homes and had money for advanced education. Snubs and other real or imagined wounds were given while in Hamburg (a known area for neo-Nazists) and they listened too well to Bin Laden. Bin Laden wasn't about to put his own neck out to "stab" the US in the heart via the financial center. He used them to get back at the West. That had nothing to do with religion- Islam or something else. He was angry and envious and he used 19 good men to do his "dirty work" for him.
All these and the intermittent ones, usually in South Asia, were not for religion but for envy and their form of "vengeance". None of them had to do with goodness and justice. The Koran doesn't allow the killing of innocents. Yet that's what most did. In most ways they are no different than the anarchists of the turn of the twentieth century, or the Red Brigade of Germany or the Weathermen in the US both in the 70s. Each used a different form of philosophy but most were based on vengeance against "assumed injustices" of the time. Religion is a form of philosophy - check the Dewey Decimal System in the city library. The skin color variation with the various attacks is merely a happenstance. Some newswriters use it against the attackers but how many of them try to find out if disrespect and snobbery by the "upper classes" and usually white are possibly the basic causes?
Orianism is merely Oriana Fallaci’s form of racism against anyone that is not Italian and "Christian." And "for some strange reasons" her attitude is found among most societies of white skin and Christian background. The number in each is the only thing that varies. Until more "intellectuals", middle class people and poorly educated get it into their heads individually and as a group that respect and equal treatment go a long way toward healing, the West will find there are always Orianas in our midst - and surprise attacks of some sort.
